in Cutting tax
Received a cheque from HMRC a couple of week ago. Not huge - £200 odd.
A few days later, get a full tax calculation which explains an amount of £528.87 as 'plus other adjustment'. In further notes, adjustments are explained as 'any tax owed for an earlier year that we have not jet collected or repaid to you ....'
But this 528.87 is an amount I disputed as owing back in 2015, for year 2013-14 (half a dozen letters between me and HMRC) which HMRC clawed back through a taxcode change in 2015-16.
(Personally I didn't think I owed the money but as my previous employer had closed down, I wasn't able to get more 'records' to argue my case).
Way and behold, they've now given me the bloody money. Is it really mine, or are they going to get it back from me when they realise in a few years time ?????????
And they haven't given me my partner's marriage allowance from her self assessment 2015-16 submitted earlier this month (but sent her her tax calculation, showing the amount coming off).

Who knows. They are a law unto themselves. A couple of years ago I received a cheque for almost £2K. A while later the paperwork came through and I realised it was for a repayment I had already claimed in the tax year they were finalising. I queried it but they insisted it was correct0

I think you might be getting confused - assuming the calculation is for 2015:16 then the £200 odd refund would be the tax due back for the Marriage Allowance transfer from your wife (this is worth a maximum of £212 but most people on PAYE owe a little at the end of the year so if your refund is £210-£211 or so it is almost certainly the tax due back from the marriage allowance)
If the 528.87 was included in your tax code for 2015:16 then it would also have to be shown in the 2015:16 tax calculation to reflect the extra tax your 2015:16 employer deducted to claw back this underpaid tax - if it wasn't included in the calculation you would get 528.87 plus the Marriage Allowance credit back.
In short I wouldn't be expecting any further refund but it also looks like you've paid off the underpaid tax from 2013:14 so your current tax code may now be back to normal (assuming nothing is owed from 2014:15)0
