A mediation service where a legally enforceable agreement is drawn up? To me it would make sense to
- agree costs to bring up children to include childcare, trips, activities, contributions to food, rent/mortgage, car, utilities etc.
- a tax credit system that allows separated parents to work out who would be better off claiming to maximise income from this source
- an agreement of proportions of child related expenditure each parent pays. So in simplest terms, I earn £50k, he earns £100, he puts in £2 to my £1. This can be adjusted for joint debts etc.
- adjustments made for overnights on an annual basis
- an agreement that one parent will be the responsible one and pay for everything, haircuts, shoes, trips etc
- the other parent pays the responsible one, based on calculations (or possibly pays the non-responsible one, depends how it all works out
- agreement when payment will start and bank transfer made
- if payments not made, legally enforceable through small claims and a no tolerance approach made by courts in much the same way as non payment of council tax is handled.
Review annually, bring P60 etc to meeting. Both sides involved and trained mediator can help steer towards something resembling fair. Agreements reflect circumstances - so richer parents agree child will need 5 X pair of Armani jeans per year @ £100 a pair, others able to agree a Primark budget. No disagreements cos prices freely available online.0
