As expected: Osborne: 'Absolutely' have to cut spending and raise taxes

George Osborne has said that the government will "absolutely" have to cut public spending and raise taxes following Friday's referendum decision to leave the European Union.

The chancellor said it is key that Britain provides fiscal stability in the wake of the Brexit decision.

"We are in a prolonged period of economic adjustment in the UK, we are adjusting to life outside the EU and it will not be as economically rosy as life inside the EU," he told BBC Radio 4.

That was obviously expected but my personal hope is that benefits and pensions are primarily cut the most. Especially pensions need to be cut a lot. Since the older population (over 65+) voted for all of this to happen, they should also bear the burden of their action and their pensions should be deservedly cut.

Young people shouldn't have to suffer for other's people's bad choices, is my personal opinion.

Well bearing in mind that the most prosperous parts of the U.K. voted heavily to stay in, it is highly likely that on average stayer pay more tax than leavers

If we lose the bankers, we're going to have to do an awful lot of cutting and taxing to make up for it. Those guys pay more tax annually than I will over my working career.

Its ok. A 10% reduction in pensions, prescription charges for pensioners, an end to the winter fuel allowance and free bus passes, and a tax on second homes and but to let should do it.

Exactly what the boomers voted for and exactly what they should get.

Cutting HB and raising taxes on landlords, plus ceasing all interference in the property market is the best way for government to help young people.

You're a property obsessive (he said with no trace of irony) and just talking your book.

I would be very happy with benefit cuts.

No non-UK citizen can have a penny in benefits to subsidize a low wage job ever again for children that don't even live in this country and for all of those saying you've been here years and paid your way you can have your contributions based benefits. After 2 tax years of NI contributions JSA pays out for 6 months. After 10 years of NI contributions there is an entitlement to the state pension whether you're British or not.

If you want benefits become a UK citizen. It'll save billions.

My reasoning behind this is that EU citizens will no longer come and do minimum wage work as they wouldn't get tax credits and housing benefit and therefore couldn't make ends meet. The skilled EU workers don't care they wouldn't have got anything anyway.

    So go ahead....cut benefits.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

There should be a link between one's referendum voting record and one's tax code/tax rate.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.
