Thruglemir, I know what statistics say about people reoffending running up debt when they have consolidated debts into mortgage, but you have to have faith in people, they are individual and make their own choices in life. Some people choose not to be on the wrong side of the statistics.

There is also the psychology of remembering how it feels to be overwhelmed with debt, and the relief and feeling of becoming debt free or at least getting it under control. I've been in both camps, I'm now 100% debt free, and even though I don't have a massive income and struggle at times I do fight to keep my family in the black.

After a bit of practice managing ones money properly becomes enjoyable, and you set yourself new challenges to further secure your financial position.

Generally speaking I do think as a nation we need to become less materialistic and pride ourselves not upon what we own but upon who we are and what we can achieve in terms of personal development, acquisition of knowledge etc - but that's a whole other discussion!
