Car Service - what's needed?
Options
Hi everyone, I have a mondeo 2.0 tdci 2007 (old shape -mk3?).
I bought it 4 years ago with 70,000 on the clock and full service history. It has now got 100k on the clock and I have done nothing to it except change the oil - roughly every 6000 miles.
As I'm taking it to the continent this summer I'm having it serviced but what should i ask them to do - what has it missed out on that should now be checked/replaced?
Thanks

Timing Belt, tensioner kit, water pump, coolant system clear out and renewal.0

Step one, log into ebay and amazon and buy the revelant haynes manual.
Step two, read it and see if it matches above.
Step three, use the GSF code JUNE43 - it was valid until yesterday damm, to price up oil, fuel and air filters.
Step four, visit local ford dealer and see if they will price match.
Step Five consider that brake fluid takes on water and if going to Alps, then replacement is a great idea to prevent boiling.0 -

Timing Belt, tensioner kit, water pump, coolant system clear out and renewal.
Mk3 has a timing chain.
The Multi belt is notoriously long lived but the tensioner is expensive and when worn out makes a racket or tickover that some people think is the DMF.
I would change the fluids, get the pads off and make sure they have lots of meat all round. Do the air filter and fuel filter.
And change both handbrake cables.
I wouldn't touch the coolant other Han to make sure it is at the right level and within specs for antifreeze capability.
The old mk3 is a hardy old hector.
I never changed the brake fluid or coolant on mine and it had done well over 200k when I sold it and my mate that bought it put more miles on it and sold it after a year or so needing the multi belt tensioner replaced.
You can tell it's the tensioner by turning on the AirCon as it makes it worse, raising the revs a tiny bit makes the noise go away.
I mostly used Mobil Super 3000 FE 5w30, but also used Castrol Magnatec, every 5/6k.
To be honest it was one of the best cars I ever had.0 -
As above its a chain and the waterpump is on the front of the engine and fairy easy to access with just basic tools. Only replace if it causes trouble.
Do get the proper metal gasket though if you ever change one.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone.
bigjl - Yes!! it does rattle at tickover and get noisier when aircon is on ( the kids get embarrassed 'cos dad's picking them up in a "tractor").
Does this tensioner need changing because a failure is likely or expensive or can the noise just be tolerated? (kids need to toughen up anyway)0 -
Can't remember the exact cost of the tensioner. It never failed on mine though when my mate traded the car in it sounded like a bag of bolts.
Talkford is very good forum for all things Ford
Here is a thread about the Aux Tensioner.
