Solicitor wants to no wher money came from before Clearing Debt but wont tell me why

Options
So today i had a phone conversation with Mortimer Clarke Solicitors acting on behalf of Cabot finance for a credit card i owed money on my DD had cancelled so to get up to date i needed to pay £150 leaving £210 left on my debt i offered to pay the whole balance today with my bank debit card.
they wanted to know where i got my money from when i asked why they wanted to know this they said they couldn't tell me.
i spoke with the supervisor who said the same and said if he told me why it would give me an inkling to why they wanted to know but refused point blank to tell me and then accused me of being evasive.
I was happy to tell them where my money came from if they would tell me why they wanted to know . he said he would disconnect the call as i wasn't telling him the truth and soon changed his mind when i said i wanted a copy of the call. so i have paid the £150. and they have set a DD for £50 per month and will be writing to confirm that they wont take my money and the bank details to get a copy of the tape. I will be contacting Cabot and letting them have a copy of the tape so they can see the geniuses they employ.
I have nothing to hide but if they want to know where my money comes from i would like to know why Simples

    Hi,

Well first off you should never speak to these idiots on the phone, as its seldom productive, everything to do with debt should be conducted in writing or by email, you then have a copy of what's been said, agreed, etc.

The reason they are asking where the money came from is because they have to now assess you can afford the payments your offering, the FSA have tightened up the slack a little, affordability is the key word these days.

    Hi there,

So today i had a phone conversation with Mortimer Clarke Solicitors acting on behalf of Cabot finance for a credit card i owed money on my DD had cancelled so to get up to date i needed to pay £150 leaving £210 left on my debt i offered to pay the whole balance today with my bank debit card.

So, this appears to be an informal arrangement (not subject to a court order) which means they reserve the right to use other debt collectors or the county court to enforce the debt. If you can genuinely afford to clear the full balance and this won't cause you financial difficulty or an issue of preference to other debts; then clear it. Get rid of the issue. Whether the debt is outstanding or not you still have the right to complain about bad service. Do everything in writing/ emails from now on.

A complaint would go to the debt collector first and then up to the Financial Ombudsman if necessary. We can only speculate why they wanted to know where the money was coming from (certainly what sourcrates suggested is very possible) but what is strange is why they refused to say "we just want to check this is affordable for you". Either way, it seems as though they rudely refuse to answer a reasonable question and if you wish to complain you can. Good luck,
