Hi
I have made and cooked a chicken, leek and bacon plate pie that is not going to be needed. Will it freeze? If so should I freeze it as it is on the enamel plate or freeze it in portions? What about reheating it?
I dont want to waste it, we could eat it cold but I would quite like to freeze it if thats possible.

put it in the freezer with a bit of clingfilm round it on its plate, then when its frozen take it off the plate and wrap it back up well with cling film and label/date it. Ive done this with meat and potato pies before now and when I take them out of the freezer just unwrap and put them on their original pie dish to defrost ...
pies are a good way of using up left overs and I make a fair few this waywading through the treacle of life!

I dont want to waste it, we could eat it cold but I would quite like to freeze it if thats possible. So long as the meat ingredients have not been frozen and thawed out before cooking, this will freeze perfectly well.
If you plan to eat it all in one sitting, I would freeze it by wrapping it, enamel plate and all, in clingfilm. If you think that you might want to eat it by the slice, I would portion it and clingfilm each slice.
I have done both these things without any problem whatsoever.
As always, when cooking from frozen, make sure that it has thoroughly thawed out (overnight in the fridge, perhaps) and then heat until piping hot throughout.
I have reheated slices of pie in the bain marie (solid) part of a stainless steel stacking pan, whilst cooking veggies below. If reheating the whole pie, I'd put it in a moderate oven for about 15 mins, then check the middle to see if it's piping hot. HTH.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thanks both, thats really helpful. I love plate pies as you can make a small amount of meat go a long way. If this works out well I might just make two next time.
I seem to remember Mum freezing pies with the pastry uncooked then cooking them from frozen but I am not sure if these were sweet or savoury pies.0 -

Back in the 1970s my mum and dad were one of the first frozen food shops in Sheffield to sell frozen food loose - mum would often come home with semi-defrosted meat and veg and chuck them into a pie dish with an uncooked pastry top and refreeze it!! probably not the ideal way but back in the 70s you had to make do and there just wasn't the health and safety food regulations that are around today regarding refreezing food!!
but yeah, you can freeze an uncooked pastry pie ... might come out looking a bit wonky and the pie top like the surface of the moon but it'll still taste lovely!wading through the treacle of life!

If I make an apple pie with cooked apples but uncooked pastry I will freeze it whole and cook it from frozen and I'm still alive and kicking the same with an uncooked meat pie I have never had a problem ,but I guess if you have cooked it then once cold I would freeze plate and all and then once frozen if you need space or don't want to eat it at one sitting I would slice into portions and wrap in cling film
Sometimes if M&S have their large meat pies reduced I will portion, wrap in cling film and freeze individually as I live alone and can get 5-6 portions from a large pie that's been reduced.£3.00 odd for 5-6 meals is a good buy in my opinion with just having to add veg to it.
My friend made me a large coffee and walnut cake a couple of weeks ago and I sliced and individually wrapped that and froze it so I only use a slice at a time. freezing is suspended animation after all and jolly useful if you live alone0 -
Just make sure that you label it well. Nothing is more embarrassing than putting a jug of cream and one of custard on to the table to accompany the Apple pie you have taken out of the freezer and cooked to impress visitors only to cut into it and find that it is chicken and ham.
My cheeks still burn when I think of it.
