Hi, im after some advice on who to turn to. Back in 2014 my mother opened a catalogue account in my name ran up a debt of £1500 in womems clothing she said i was living there when i wasn't now ive just moved into my own place the debt has come through to me. I phoned the police they took a statement of me brought her into interview and she has said we mutually agreed on the catalogue to be opened in my name but for her to get stuff and she pays them of she said she is liable for £1100 worth of stuff but not £400 i told the police this is a complete pack of lies and they said to get a solicitor so i phoned 3 local solicitors and they said its a civil matter that cant be dealt with them. I dont know who else to turn to now and feel like i will have to pay as i dont want this on my credit. Does anyone no what i can do please

\its not a civil matter, a crime has been committed.
What is happening with your mother now, they should be questioning her and charging her..
Let her plead guilty or not guilty in court.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
She has had a police interview. Which she said we mutually agreed to open the account and she agreed to pay me regular payments. I said this was a lie and they said its up to a solicitor to take over which ive tried and every solicitor has said its not a criminal matter0

Don't waste money on solicitors. Give the catalogue company the police investigation number and let them know it's a fraudulent debt.
The matter stops there unless they want to take court action against YOU, which is unlikely.0 -

May also be on the OP's credit file as a default if it's now been linked, so may not quite stop there if they need to get that off.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Even if it were a civil matter (which it isn't), since when did solicitors not deal with civil matters :huh:0 -
Is it on any of your credit files ( check all 3). If it is then go back to them and tell them there is a police investigation for fraud. Same if you are ever chased for the debt.
If it isnt on there them just keep an eye on things to make sure it doesn't crop up.
