Help getting a mortgage when already named on one

I am hoping that someone could give me advice on the following.
My Son bought a house together with his ex-finance a few years ago.The relationship fell apart and she and his daughter still live in the house. although he pays child maintenance he pays nothing toward the house.
He now needs to move on, and out of our house! and would like to buy another very small house instead of renting. He has a deposit. but we have had advise that he wouldn't be able to apply for another mortgage, as he is named on the first. No need to ask his ex to take him of the original as the answer would be no.
any ideas??

would his income support both mortgages?0

He would be liable for extra stamp duty on the second property.0

Resolve the issue of the first property. As the problem isn't going away by itself. .0

Is the child still a minor?
Silly question, answer is probably yes since he's paying maintenance.
OP, being on a mortgage doesn't necessarily stop him being on another - it's about what his income can support.0
