Sweet potatoes in chutney??

Good morning.

I've been having a preserving frenzy this last couple of weeks ;)

Last week's veg box had a couple of sweet potatoes in it - they are not my favorite - do you think I could put them in chutney  On one hand I don't see why not on the other hand it sounds a bit wrong - has anyone tried?

Thanks

Did a bit of a Google on your behalf and came up with this:
    http://www.popular-traditional-argentina-food.com/dulcedebatata.html
It seems to be similar to a fruit cheese.
I could not find anything for chutney, in fact the following is the nearest I could get to a savoury preserve:
    Sweet Potato Crisps
These are very delicious so you’ll have trouble keeping the grown ups from eating them, they also count as one portion of the 5 portions of fruit and veg you should have every day unlike normal potatoes. Much healthier than normal potato crisps.
    Ingredients: for 2 Lunchbox Servings
    • 1 x Sweet Potato
    • A little Olive Oil
    • Salt
You will need.... Potato Peeler, Baking Tray, Wire Rack, An Adult
How to make Sweet Potato Crisps.... WASH YOUR HANDS
    1. GET AN ADULT to turn the oven onto 220oc/425oF/Gas Mark 8 and put a shelf onto the top runner. (Aga Roasting oven - shelf on top set of runners.)
    2. Wash the Sweet Potato and GET AN ADULT to help or supervise while you peel it. Once peeled, discard the skin and continue the peel the sweet potato lengthways until you’ve used up all of the potato, this will give you lots of ribbons of sweet potato.
    3. Oil the Baking tray with olive oil and place the ribbons of potato on the baking tray, sprinkle with a little salt and GET AN ADULT to put the baking tray into the oven and put the timer on for 10 minutes.
    4. GET AN ADULT to check on the ribbons and turn them over, once they start to go gold brown at the edges they are cooked. GET AN ADULT to remove them from the oven and tip them onto kitchen roll to cool. They won’t be totally crisp but are tasty. Once cooled you can pack them into your lunch box, They will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

I did find those two as well but I assumed that they were not preserves but designed to be eaten fresh, so not the sort of thing that the OP was after - they do sound lovely thought - quite Christmassy with all the dried fruit!
  • Thanks guys :T I think I might adapt a recipe. I just wondered if anyone had tried with any sucess. I have a stack of damsons so might try a spiced damson and sweet potato chutney using ratios from a "proper" recipe.
    ;)
