Forced Breaks

Options
My partner is working an 11 hour shift, and it entitled to a 30 min break for 6 hours. He worked for 1.5 hours and they sent him for a 2hour break, then worked another 1.5 hours and got sent for another hour break. All unpaid I may add. Can they do this? They just decide its not busy enough and make him stop working? Surely its like saying 'Start at 11, just incase its busy, but we wont pay you'
Thanks :)

It's effectively a split shift, unpleasant to work but not illegal as far as I'm aware.

    Is this an isolated incident?

What did O/H sign up too?

About as nuts as the place that used to send me on break and lunch combined 2 hours before home time so I can sympathise totally, (though know what I'd do on any 'extended' break ;) )

To be fair, they did go on to offer an exit interview on leaving where I could express my dis-satisfaction. Got the feeling these break problems can be the result of last in, last to choose sometimes regretfully.
  • Well hes over his contracted hours, he does double these every week. But he was down to work 11-3, 4-10. Then it went quiet so they decided to give him a 2 hour break, an hour before his actual break.
So it wasn't officially a split shift. That would be fine, he could have come home etc if it was planned, but they just sprung it on him.
