We have our key in the lock and turned a half turn so it can't be poked out of the lock. Other door we can't leave key in until ds4 is home, which can sometimes be late/early .

At least you are all safe, that's the main thing xx

Having working in the double glazing industry years ago and called out to quote after many burglaries the worse thing you can do is leave key in door. If they get in through a window then they have no way of removing the large things like tvs unless they can get out through a door. We saw a burglary where everything was piled up by back door ready to go and then they couldn't find the key.
Unfortunately for me my new house the front door is lever/lever so need the key to get out as my fire exit so have to leave key in and yes I do leave it slightly turned.
If leaving a house empty while on holiday please remove all door and window keys after locking. If you have old style patio doors then an anti lift bolt is easy to fix and even a very experience thief would find that impossible from the outside.

After my years in sales and occasionally installation it is a very rare house I couldn't break into. To be honest all you need to do on any house is drill straight into the key lock and the pins drop out. Good to know if you get locked out as doesn't damage door and new barrel is only a few quid.

So to summarise. by all means leave keys in locks if you are in the house BUT not if you are out.

Mrs ids sounds like you had an opportunist walk in. The police take these a bit more seriously as you are in the house at the time.
I had one years ago when we were in front room eating fish and chips. Didn't notice, hubby went to look for wallet and couldn't find it so asked me to find purse so he could go up pub. Wasn't untl he was in pub he found out about 12 houses had had walk ins that evening. All houses backed onto the same field.
My handbag and car keys had been taken and hubbys wallet. Very lucky that he had moved the large envelope of cash from kitchen window cill when he had a shower. What thief was doing was watching back of house and if noboby came into the back room (kitchen) for 10 mins he tried the door. Police found him walking along the road counting the money.
My handbag was found with keys when someone was pruning a bush the next summer.

Hope this info helps those taking holidays.
