I think it seems odd that a SA would look at CCTV and locate the exact time when your stepson took the water and then continue to watch it to check whether he paid or not. Are you sure there's nothing personal between them.....a grudge maybe?
Is there something more to this scamps that you are not aware of?
He should get some advice.......
I don't quite understand it myslf. The person who he thinks it is has been off sick for 3 months. She looked ath the CCTV on her break for the the last day.
How is an employee allowed to look at CCTV. I thought It's only allowed by security. After what I have been through I am upset by this.
I think he should appeal as the store couldn't take payment but it was a health issue...he might have passed out without a drink.
He only took water so it would be a valid arguement.......
It smacks of a vendetta (which should be mentioned), keep us posted xxx.0 -

Bloody fuming!!!
I hope someone can help.
My stepson has been working for co=op for 18 months and has worked his way up to assistant manager. He is a good worker, taking on any job needed when other people are off, he'll go in. He has sometimes worked 80 hr a week shifts. He's the most honest and reliable guy I know.
Last week he had to be in the store at 6am, after a night drinking!
Store opens at 7am and he felt thirsty, so grabbed a bottle of 45p water, but as thr till dosen't open until 7am, couldn't put it through.
As I said, He's an assistant manager, so he had do all the delivery things, staff changes and all the other stuff that come with running a store.
Fast forward 1 day,He's been dismissed, An SA apparently was looking through the CCTV and found that my stepson hadn't paid for the bottle of water.
He the most honest bloke I know, so this was an oversight as he was so busy.
1. Is an SA allowed to look at CCTV when on their break or at anytime?
2. They also went over the manager but instead went to head office.
3. He has been the most respected in store and his store is making the most profit in th SW.
He has lost his job over a 45p bottle of water!!
Do you think this is right??
He's been dismissed!!!
Legally, they can finish him without a reason with him being there only 18 months.
I believe it would be down to individual company policy with regards who can and who cant view CCTV, but I would have thought it would have been locked up, and not accessible to any staff below management.“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Just to add to my post above, and to echo what TM said, it does sound odd that this assistant found the part where he got the bottle, and then managed to observe all his actions for the full shift to make sure he had not paid for it, in a break.“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Sorry to hear this - it will be very stressful for him and his family.
He really needs to get legal advice (there may be other boards on here where they could provide some advice too?).
On the face of it, he did take the 45p bottle of water without paying for it, whether intentionally or not, therefore he needs to get advice to be able to put forward his side of the story in terms of lack of intent. Whether an SA, a member of security or a member of senior management watched the CCTV (and whether the SA had a right to do so is may be a separate issue), however, taking the water without paying would remain the issue that led to his dismissal, if that is all that has happened.
Sorry mine is possibly not the most helpful response - he needs legal/employment advice. Many solicitors offer a free initial consultation, a union (if he has one) may also be able to help .
Just adding - you say he was in work at 6am after a night drinking - that may also be a factor as some employers take a stong line against employees working when they may be under the influence of alcohol.

Good morning all
Scamps I am with all the other posters He needs independent advice
I am with anon He took without paying, may have been deemed unfit to work through alcohol but I am surprised that a staff member was able to watch extensive footage on CCTV
IN our company only the those named as directors and myself have automatic access and more info can be obtained at Information Commissioners Office
ACAS and CAB should be able to offer advice but with only 18 months service it is more difficult

a question please.
I noticed that channel 4 are doing a film premier on Saturday - The Book Thief
Please can I ask is it a suitable film to watch for sensitive souls?
or is it better recorded and then you can zoom over the bad bits
I am hating the bullying scenes in Eastenders - that is my level
Lol i live in essex and have never watched eastenders ever!! The book thief is a wonderful film, you will love it.0
