I still get cravings for Zabaglione. Not the dessert in a dish, the party version.
In the early 90s I used to take an elderly neighbour shopping. I started offering having seen her paying way over the odds for everything at the corner shop. Anyway it was a three hour stint every Thursday, Post Office for pension then a twelve mile drive to a place that had a supermarket, Iceland, Boots, etc with parking right outside the entrance. In Iceland she always made me choose something for myself, so I chose Zabaglione. It was like a gateau, very light Amaretto sponge, layers of mousse and cream, topped off with tiny meringues. You had to cut it whilst frozen and put it into serving dishes to defrost otherwise you ended up with a squishy mess.
Never seen it before these outings, never seen it since she died.
I contacted Iceland HQ a few years later to ask when they were stocking it again. Apparently it never existed, wasn't on the backlist, couldn't be found in the archived orders, and nobody had ever heard of it.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
