Can I Work from Home for + £30K per year?

Hi,
Having worked in the same industry since longer than I care to remember, I have reached a crossroads in my life which is driving me mad! I live in Scotland and have a 3 hour round trip to the office on an almost daily basis. There are no companies local to me that can offer anywhere near the same salary. I am missing my child growing up. I want to work from home but cant afford to take a huge drop in salary, nor can we move away due to other commitments. Does anyone have any ideas or advice?
My Partner and I have already managed to reduce our monthly outgoings through the great advice on this website.

What sort of work do you do or are qualified to do? Lots of work can pay £30K in the employer's workplace but not all would fit in well with being based at home as your workplace.0

No-one is going to employ you to work from home for that salary. However if you set up your own business then you could earn that kind of money if you are successful. Are there any skills that you could sell to other businesses? Any gaps in the market that you've spotted? Any talent that you have that might be of use to others?
Don't be too tied to your salary expectations. Don't miss an opportunity because it is lower paid. You'd be surprised with what you could get by on if you set your mind to it and I believe that if you do what you love the money will come without you even looking!Stercus accidit0 -
I have a friend who is a Marketing Strategist. He works for one of the big banks, goes into the office approx once a fortnight, and gets paid a lot more than £30K.Gone ... or have I?0

Yep - I earned a lot more than that doing sales from home. Had to go to London for one day every fortnight for a management meeting but that was scheduled so easy to organise. It was a bit of being in the right place at the right time - I went to work for a client of mine following redundancy at my then existing employers.
However, I still had my kids going to childminders because to do a job like that takes -and deserves - 100% commitment while you're being paid. the up side was I had no commuting time, and if I wanted to knock off early to play tennis with my daughters or meet a friend for a coffee then it was okay as long as targets were being met.
To earn a good salary you have to be good at what you do ( I know we are surrounded by exceptions to this rule!) so my advice would be look at your current skills and contacts and from that work out the possibilities. Leftie gives very good advice - if you enjoy what you do the money comes! And setting up on your own might be an option.
Good luck with whatever you decide.0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a number of skills including selling and I want to continue to work in the same industry but there always seems to be a problem with trust. Many people I have known are unable to work from home as they find themselves switching on the tv or doing the hoovering. My idea of working from home is being able to focus on what I'm doing with minimal disruption thereby further improving my productivity without having to travel for hours and being exhausted before I even start!
My main problem is convincing the powers that be that it's at least worth a try.0 -

Why not contact the companies you think you would like to work for, send them your CV and tell them (honestly) what you are looking for? You may also be able to adapt your selling skills to other services/industries.
Using a combination of yellow pages, local papers and your local library, you can also identify businesses nearby that you could contact. After all, you have got some great skills - you just need to let them know you exist!
If there is a local Chamber of Commerce or local business forum, join it! This is a great networking opportunity.
Good luck!Mum of 4 :exclamati

Most good work from home jobs are in selling.
Proper jobs, real companies.
£30k isn't unachievable as even a basic in a lot of instances
Check out monster.co.uk for starters.
Yellow Pages always pay exceeeeeedingly well, check their website for vacancies in your area.0
