Any ideas for a protector/cover (anti-bird!) for foil tops of glass milk bottles?!

Hi!

Am looking for a protector/cover for the foil top of a milk bottle - an anti-bird device that I can leave out on the doorstep for the milkman to use!

As over the past few weeks the milkman's stock of plastic bottles with plastic lids has been replaced by the older style of glass bottles with foil tops/lids.

And the bloomin' birds love pecking out the foil tops!

The milkman always delivers at approx. 2am, so we seldom see the milk bottles till breakfast time.

I have Googled to see if any gadgets have been designed as such a protector against bird attacks ;) but have not found any inventions/retail items along these lines.

Any ideas for a simple solution to this age-old problem?

Empty yogurt pots, put them over the top of the empties and milko should transfer them to the full ones when he delivers.

    Thanks martinthebandit
Great idea, but unfortunately we don't buy small yoghurts! (We only buy the mega-large pots.) And I reckon the large ones would easily blow off in the high winds we can get on our hill.

But you made me think of any other small discardable pots we could use . . .

So far I haven't thought of anything. I have thought of using egg cups, but as we don't boil eggs any more - we prefer to poach! - have found we no longer own any! :D So that small pot hasn't provided a solution either! :o

As above, or a plastic cup.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Or a big plastic box to sit over the top of all of them? My neighbour built herself a wooden hinged box that sits next to her gate, but that might be rather extreme! Very cheap supermarket glasses/ramekins?

I suppose suggesting buying milk from the supermarket's not a goer then?

I bought one of these for £3.99, and leave a couple of ice packs in it every night:

My late Mum being a frugal lady used to leave a couple of plastic egg cups out and our milkman would pop them over the foil tops We always had gold top milk which was very creamy and delicious on your cereal I haven't seen it for ages though. Back in the 1940s-50s we didn't have a fridge so the bottles went in a covered pail of cold water to keep cool, she kept the pails in out coal-celler which was very cool and dark

I'm sure my parents had a red plastic top in like a cone shape that came from a milk company (possibly Dairy Crest?) This was years ago, mind

We have milk in bottles but don't have the problem. We used to when the milk had cream on the top. Does anyone remember when the milk used to burst out of the top of the bottle, when it froze when we had proper winters! :D

Anyway, what about buying a couple of small pots of yogurts just this once so you have the pots. Hopefully they won't blow away.
