Student Loans company asking for a grant back 4 years on

I have recently just finished University where I have studied for 3 years and had a year out at work.In my first year at University my father lost his job and thus my household income was halved meaning I was entitled to a grant from the student loans company. Now almost 4 years on, I have received a call saying I wasn't actually entitled to that grant and they want it back. Naturally I don't have £1000 just lying around and wanted to know if I have any rights where they can only demand the money back within a certain time limit as almost 4 years later seems ridiculous to me.
Thanks

They can claim this back at any time as far as I am aware, have you contacted them regarding this?
They may have just pulled the funding as they need evidence?

Id be asking why they think you weren't entitled to it.
Offer to pay it over x amount of months but be sensible.0 -
I have spoken to them and they seem to think my dad was working this year and thus say i wasn't entitled to the grant. They have asked for evidence of the total household earnings but it may take a while to get it all together and also a real pain getting records for the past 4 years. I just find it really frustrating that 4 years on, after i have used this money to cover living costs at University they now ask fr it back when i don't have it and feel they should have informed me much sooner.0

It doesn't matter how long ago it was, you took the money from them.
All financial records should be kept for 6 years.
Find the evidence to support you having grant and send it to them
or
agree with them and setup a payment plan.
Short term pain, long term gain. This could save you £1,000s like you said.0
