Has anyone entered the Social Work profession via the postgraduate route? I am trying to make sense of the bursary system. Thanks

Not the ma route. But working as a social worker and having students in. Shop around. The students we have currently get two statutory placements which is good. Not something offered by the university I went to. I personally didn't even get one.

The bursary has changed since I entered so wouldn't want to try to get my head around it. All students in my year got one. The year afterwards it became possibly 75% and was I think linked to performance. Speak to your university of choice because I think that may manage aspects of it individually.

    Stashbuster - 2014 98/100 - 2015 175/200 - 2016 501 / 500 2017 - 200 / 500 2018 3 / 500

  • Hi all

Thank you for your replies. I will speak to the individual universities. From what I can gather, it seems the NHS bursary would fund up to a maximum of 3,700 for the course fees but the cheapest course I can find in my area is 7,600. It seems they do also give a bursary for living costs but I still don't think the amount would make up the difference.

Will keep looking though thank you!
  • Hi
I'm currently going through the process of applying for the MA social work. From what I understand about the bursaries is that only so many places are allocated bursaries, the university makes recommendations as to who they feel should have a bursary based on performance and the selection phase and previous vocational experience. The bursary is around £3200 ish off the top of my head (around £3700 for London) and they pay your course fees in addition to this. There is also a further grant which is means tested if you have dependents etc.
