Our maturity is due in less than 6 weeks. Aviva cannot give us a ballpark about its maturity value even this close.

Aviva are not authorised to give opinion or advice. However, your financial adviser could give you a ballpark. However, as the value of the plan changes daily, the range of value will reflect the investment fund you are in.
Find it hard to believe that any terminal bonus (and the phrase "terminal bonus, if any" was used) could be nil considering Aviva have failed to pay any reasonable amount of annual bonus for many years.

You should know what your terminal bonus is at it accrues as it goes along and is available on any given day.
but I find the whole 'smoke and mirrors' surrounding their investment of our money quite unpalatable. If it hadn't been for the MEP on our policy we'd have ditched it years ago but damned if I'm letting them off the hook on that, assuming of course they'll honour it (well, they hadn't given us the 3 years notice they wouldn't pay it so we are having to assume that as well, as they cannot actually tell us apparently )

There isnt any smoke and mirrors. They publish accounts for the fund. The smoothing does leave some discretion to the insurer which brings a bit of uncertainty. However, all investments have some uncertainty.

They cant tell you exactly what MEP they will pay as the maturity value is not known until maturity. However, a ballpark figure is easy to work out. Never had any issues with them supplying the info to work it out.
