Bike Tyre Slime - advice please

  • I always carry a spare tube. With the quick release wheel nuts, I can be back on the road in about five minutes. Once we went out to through the old railway top the wobbleales emporium. On the way there, BoPsie's bike got a puncture. Fixed. On the way home, BoP's bike got a puncture and I had to carry the treader three miles home!

I have always found that decent tyres helps prevent punctures, though on one occasion, someone deliberately laid pins and bits on the cycleway round here. Fortunately, another sysclits had stopped there and we helped clear the path. Never found the Pollock!

I quite agree but a bit of practice in the warm will reduce the discomfort of a puncture in the wind and rain. Simply making sure all you need is where you think it is can be a big help, if you use a saddle bag have the tyre levers where you can get them 1st, then spare inner-tube, then gas pump (if you use one) nothing worse than digging though everything else to get to the one thing you need imo.

I haven't been out on the bike for a couple of weeks due to the generally awful weather so I should have used that time to practice. I did, however, take my bike in for a service so the time wasn't completely wasted.
  • I used Slime in some Conti inner tubes that you could take the valve core out of for use over winter. Didn't fancy standing by the side of the road trying to replace the tube whilst rapidly freezing and losing feeling in my hands (happened the winter before).

Overall it worked really well. I'll check again before I start to use those wheels to see if it has dried out but even if I have to replace the tubes completely I'll be happy with that small expense for the peace of mind it gave me.
