Self Assessment Incorrectly Charged Class 2 NIC's

  • Managed to work my way through the link although it didn't display properly on my computer. I know the question shown in the link above said put an X in the box, but in fact when you come to the question on the self assessment form it's a drop down menu and you have to choose Yes or No to say if you want to pay the contributions voluntarily.

I chose the No option but it still says I owe £145. I expected it to vanish. The top of the page clearly states, 'If your profits are £5965 or more you must pay Class 2 NICs. For 2015 to 2016, Class 2 NICs are £2.80 a week. Your self-employment record shows you owe £145.60.'

A shot in the dark - delete the self-employment section and start again. Hardly scientific but it might work if you initially answered the question incorrectly!
  • Yes that might be worth a try! I tried logging in on a different computer to see if that would help but it didn't.

I'm sure when I first logged on there was a message about it being a BETA test and asking for feedback, but I can't see the message now... although at this particular question there is a link to amend self employment details and recalculate the NI due (only if you need to change the date you started or stopped being SE, it says) but when I click on that link it says the page isn't available yet - so I'm wondering if it's actually a glitch on the website.

Might end up having to phone them but from what Glider3560 said, that doesn't sound like a very good option either!

Are you sure the NICS owing is for the 2015/16 year? It may be an idea to ring HMRC and clarify just which year the NICS applies to. I was surprised recently to discover that the NICS being requested was for the 2013/14 year, not the 14/15 year we had just completed and filed in January this year.
  • From what I can see it's for the 2015/16 year. Even if it was for last year, the profits were still below the threshold - and I had a small earnings exemption certificate, too. Received a letter last year saying they were changing the way it's collected and will be dealt with via the tax return from now on, so the small earnings exemption is no longer valid.
  • I phoned the self assessment helpline this morning. The lady I spoke to was very nice but couldn't tell me what the problem is. She said I should just submit the return and phone them after a few days so they can go through it with me.

I wonder if it's anything to do with my earnings from my part time job (approx 9k)? The self assessment form looks like it relates only to my self employed earnings, but I wonder. Have looked back at a few payslips and it doesn't look like I've been paying NI at the rate of £2.80 per week through my payslip - some months I've paid £1.15 for the month (which is much less than £2.80 per week) - but why wouldn't they collect the right amount through my payslip?

Nothing to do with your part-time job - you are on completely the wrong track here! Two entirely different types of National Insurance.

    OK thanks. :)

No idea what's gone wrong then. The only things I can think of now are a) a website glitch or b) a compatibility glitch as I use a mac (and historically I have had problems with some websites not working properly on a mac). But I'm grasping at straws really.

If you are using the Safari browser, I don't think that's the issue (as I used it to complete my online return.)

I've tried it in safari and also firefox. Also in desperation have just logged in on my son's pc... it's exactly the same on all of them :(

Maybe there's something else I've done wrongly and I just haven't been able to spot it yet.
  • This is probably a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway. Those of you who have filled in the form, did you notice if the Class 2 amount owed actually changed to nil?
