Can a bank say I owe them money I didn't agree to borrow?
I had an issue with a bank account last year. I was in dispute with a large company about how much money I owed them. They proceeded to request the money via direct debit. It was just over £6000. I didn't have any money in the account, but for some reason my bank decided to pay the direct debit, leaving me £6000 overdrawn.
The debt is now with a debt collection agency. My question is can they legally do this? Even though I didn't agree to borrow the money?
Any help is appreciated.

Just use the direct debit guarantee and get the money back.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

This was last year, the account is now closed and is with debt collectors.0

That route is closed then. Why didn't you follow it up before now? and what about the company that was paid? what happened there?0

Although somehow I find this story a bit far fetched, a 6000 direct debit, paid from an account with no money0

To be honest it's only recently I've been sorting out my debts. II didn't even realise there was a direct debit guarantee, I called my bank when it happened and they didn't say anything about it.0 -

I have absolutely no reason to make up random stories. I have better things to do with my time0 -

So just to be clear
Did you have a £6000 overdraft facilty or was this an unauthorised overdraft?
What did the bank actually say when you disputed them paying it?
What did the company say?0 -

What did the company say?
No, the overdraft facility was £1500.
The bank said that they didn't know why it had been paid, and the money had gone so there was nothing they could do.
The company (google) said I owed them the money and that was that. The dispute was over an adwords account.0 -

You need to raise an official complaint with your bank, for
A) paying this and allowing you to go 4500 unauthorisedfalsely telling you the money couldn't be reclaimed

How would I go about doing that? And what steps can I take if the bank refuse to refund the money?
The bank is RBS0
