Dreaded wait of salary negotiation.. how long to wait

Hi all,
I went for a final interview on Friday 27th afternoon. The whole interview process took a month and a half in total, with 3 official interviews and one telephone. Throughout the process it has always been very positive, and I was told on my 2nd interview that I was 1 of 2 candidates. By the 3rd interview I was told I was the only one as the other candidate did not impress. I met the whole team on the third interview and got great feedback from their HR.
On Tuesday, I was offered the job verbally. but salary was only £1.5k more than what I am currently earning. The new company offers great opportunities however I also know that it is alot harder work, with working from 8am - 8pm workdays the norm (which i don't mind if i get compensated fairly). At my current company i work 9 - 5pm, all office based with no access to work emails/system from home. I expressed that I was expecting more to show that I am making progression in my career. However I asked the recruiter to send the offer over in writing so I can consider all of the benefits and weigh everything up. On friday i told my boss I was quitting and he showed me my review that stated I was scheduled for a £5k pay rise at the end of this month, decided a week ago (dated document). I also received the written offer from the new company at close of play that day.
This Monday i went back to the recruiter and told them that my boss has given me a pay rise, it was decided before i mentioned i might leave, and i can prove it in writing if needs be. The HR man was very understanding and stated that he would need to go back and it will need a high up managers approval. He always previously revealed that the salary band for that role is £5k +/- either way. I said it would make the decision easier if they could consider at least £4k more than my current, instead of just £1k. He said he will try to get back to me on Tuesday evening because it requires a few approvals.
I haven't heard anything from him yet, how long should I wait? Is it a game of who speaks first? The job has not been re advertised yet.
many thanks

You really are playing on the backfoot here, You shouldn't wait for their offer.
You make an offer. "My current employer has increased my salary to £X0,000. With that I have full employment protection. My skills are obviously in demand. Therefore I would be looking for X+Y,000 to move."0 -
Thanks Guest101!
The new company offers much better benefits such as healthcare, dental, and 2 days more holidays than mine (current 25 days). However i do think i am worth more than just a £1.5k increase. I also mentioned to the HR man that I have done research for my job, and the average salary is £5k more than what they are offering.
Do you think i should chase? Or sit it out a little longer?0 -

In the UK right?
I mean it's likely the healthcare you get will still be at an NHS site, with NHS doctors, just in a private room.
Dental - well NHS costs are capped at £200, most are covered by £50, and you go to your dentist, maybe once a year. So that's £50.
2 Holiday days isn't that much, I bet you could wangle flexi working and get the equivalent. - but I can see a benefit there.
personally I think you may have left your position a little weak, but it's not beyond saving. I'd chase them up just to say, out of professional courtesy you do need to give your employer either a signature or notice.
BUT remember you lose all employment rights when you join this new company. For up to 2 years they can sack you for any reason, to me, that outweighs any of the benefits so far listed.0
