State pension and NI qualifying years

I'm a while away from retirement but after reading various threads on here thought that obtaining confirmation of my NI record might be sensible.

It duly arrived today - two identical letters in fact, good old efficient HMRC - and on the one hand confirmed my own understanding that, having commenced work (and NI contributions) in 1987/88 I have 29 years up to 2015/16. That's according to the annual contributions table included with the letter(s).

The covering letter itself, though, says that "Our records show that you currently have 33 qualifying years up to 5 April 2016."

Is that just HMRC being useless or am I missing something? I've certainly not "bought" additional years. Are there circumstances where those additional years can arise?

I can't explain why you have an extra 4, but three could well be down to the three years credits that were automatically awarded to young people in full time education between the ages of 16-18.

It was all not just those in full time education.
