Is he doing this as he thinks he'll be more likely to be considered for a job if it appears that he lives locally? If so that's understandable but as you suggest could be bad news for you, and I would tell him to stop doing that now.

I think its more that I told him if need be he can stay at mine for a week or so if he finds work till he gets own place, and I know when he has been asked at interview before about where he lives he tells me he says he is able to stay with me.

If I had a 28 year old graduate son who'd been unemployed for 3 years, living at home and not paying his way, I think I'd "put him down " on a regular basis as well - they probably want to give him a good shake!

From what he tells me he offers to pay them and they say no, just like he offered to pay for better broadband and even their line rental but they refused saying they were happy with what they had.

From what I know they were putting him down even when he was at university and growing up not just for not working but as his brothers are all in very good jobs (one works on oil rigs, one works in engineering in another country my friend himself has an engineering degree)

He did tell me how they have called him a sinner for being gay before and how he won't get into heaven unless he meets a girl and gets married and the such, don't know if its true but he mentions it a lot.

    .

In his situation, the last thing I would do is to live at home, much less accept free board and lodgings from them. Perhaps he ought to learn a bit of self respect, stand on his own two feet and stop cadging off people - then, perhaps, they might learn to respect him.

The thing is you don't know the situation, from the things he told me was when he was younger he worked and paid parents about £40 a week, but they don't charge him when hes on benefits which is a good thing, he does say he does chores for them like shopping and cutting grass and is willing to pay them the money.

It could be they are thinking if he saves the money he can afford to move out so thats why they don't ask for money from him, but that being said he also said they won't let him use the landline as they are worried about large phone bills but like with the internet even though he offers to pay for the unlimited calls every month they don't let him (he even said he was willing to put the bills in his name and pay the entire line rental and broadband and calls)

He only moved back to his parents after he lost his last job on trial period and his landlord was doing tax cons (1 bedroom flat where she didn't live and she divided it into 5 rooms getting £50 a week each and wasn't registered as a landlord) so he couldn't get housing benefit or he would of stayed.

Its only been building up in the time since then living in middle of nowhere that he feels like he has no freedom, he sees me for a few days every 2 months anad during that time he has a few drinks and eats large take aways (his town doesn't even have a takeaway its that small)

He's 28 now so its not as if hes been not paying for many years, and he does do favours for his parents like a day or two of unpaid "work" for a friend of his parents which is technically a real job and breaks health and safety rules and is expected to do it with no complaints (the person keeps saying he will give my friend a real job, the usual "I have a relative who lives a long way away who needs staff")

I can't tell if his problems are his personality more than anything else, from what I know of him hes a very hard worker, he managed to get a chainsaw license through local charity (which was "paid" for by done volunteer work gardening and such for them) he spends days doing unpaid admin work for same charity and even filiming things for them and editing it on his computer which takes up a lot of free time.

I suppose he can get a reference from them though, but its not as if he is just getting something for nothing.

The problem he had with his house share before was they didn't take people on benefits (which was partly due to landlords tax con) so even if he didn't move in till he found a job should he lose it at some point he is screwed.

The place I live is very cheap rent, talking £275 on average for a 2 bedroom flat (unfurnished) then if moneys tight he can let out his spare room.

Its the insurance that is the killer.

    Its cheap for a reason.

Any train/bus connections to a place with jobs.

    Running a car is madness.

The ONLY reason he didn't get the last 2 jobs he went for is because he didn't drive, and every job interview he has had, has asked him if he drove I remember him saying for this one and previous ones they said to him the reasoning being if they wanted him to come in at short notice and its a quick drive in car or more than a hour by bus/train they prefer someone who drives.

So the common thing he keeps getting told is essentially why take someone who doesn't own a car over someone who can get straight into a car and be at workplace in 30 minutes or less.

My thoughts were live in nicer part of town, or closer to the city which has higher rent but lower insurance as it will balance itself out as even if at the difference between paying low rent but high insurance cand high rent and low insurance is about £300 a year it would be worth it long term.

If he can get away without a car I would explore all options including travel and accommodation in terms of each job that he applies for/gets interviews for.

I have a car pretty much for work purposes only. I hate driving and if it wasn't for the job I would probably ditch the car. Unfortunately I need the car for this job 1) to get there as on any given day I can be working out of 1 of 2 offices or even both of them in one day the offices are over an hours drive apart. 2) Visiting clients that may be 40 miles apart 3) carrying a whole host of expensive equipment (costing tens of thousands) etc.

I find the costs of running a car for basically work to be crazy in cost terms so if he doesn't need one. I would advise don't get one

If he is applying for jobs such as cleaning and gardening, he won't be told he needs a car. For some jobs it may be a requirement, but not for most jobs. There are thousands of workers who use public transport - yet they managed to get jobs. My ex was a delivery driver, but he wasn't required to have his own transport to get into work.
