Careers/Jobs similar to teaching

Hi Folks

I love teaching/advicing people. However, I don't want to teach in a school because I don't think I would be able to control the kids !!

Can somebody be kind enough to give me a few ideas of other jobs/careers which are similar to teaching?

Thank You.

You might find that kids are better behaved in sixth-form colleges or private schools. Otherwise you can always train people in various jobs.

It might help if you learned to spell 'advising' correctly mind! ;)

    Thanks Spidernick.

I have looked into this. To teach in 6th form colleges I would need to study a PGCE, and even after that, there would be no guarantee of a job!

You'll need a PGCE to teach in a school and there won't be any guarantee of a job after that either.

What qualifications do you already have and what experience?

Ideally, I want to teach adults.

I took a PTLLS course in 2009 (as it was known then), in order to get a job teaching adults. However, soon after, the coalition government came in, and there were cutbacks and a fair few colleges either cut down on subjects offered. or closed down completely, or merged.

Therefore, i gave up the idea since I would have had to take a further qualification (DTLLS) in order to become fully qualified to teach adults.

How about Teaching English as a Foreign Language? That is quicker than going down the PGCE route, I believe and should also allow you to teach overseas (as well as the UK), if you wanted to do so.

    Thanks for your suggestion, Spidernick.

I have also looked into that, and it seems that since the course is geared towards teaching English to individuals who first language isn't English, it seems most of these jobs are based abroad! I can't leave and go abroad since I have a family here and 3 teenage kids.

Do you have any particular skills that can be taught to others. I only say that as I started teaching in a University because of knowledge I had built up over the years, rather than a qualification in adult learning that I had. It was part time, ad-hoc lecturing, but I got quite a lot of hours, which could have been built up over the years if i had wanted. I still do some hours now and then.

Also, I would see 'teaching' and 'advice' as two completely different sectors, which one would you rather?

What other qualifications do you have? Are you, for example, a graduate or have vocational/professional qualifications?

    Thanks for your reply Paully.

I would rather 'teach' than 'advise'. I would love to become a maths tutor and teach students up to GCSE level.
