No you cannot take breaks when you want. The law says that if you work six hours or more then the employer must give you at least one break of 20 minutes which doesn't need to be paid. The employer can give more if they want, and they don't have to pay breaks. Your main break should be around about the middle of the shift - not near the beginning or the end.wonganumpty wrote: »Can my company force me to take an unpaid break whenever they want?

As above.
My official working hours are 9AM to 5.15PM Monday to Friday, with a 45 minute lunch break. My paid working hours are 37.5 hours per week ... as I'm physically at work for 8.25 hours per day, 5 x 8.25 = 41.25 hours so it's obvious that I'm not paid for the lunch break.
Your situation is no different (really) to anyone else.0 -

Yes, the main break should be near the middle of the shift but is that enforceable in any way? Can a company running 8.5 hour shifts tell an employee they must take a 30 min break at the end of their shift? IE, in the overlap.
