pension waiver taken in error

hi
I am seeing deductions in my contributions to my pension. I queried this, and after 3 months of chasing, I have an email offering a refund on a pension waiver.
I've queried how far back the waiver has been taken incorrectly. It's looking like 2.5% of my contribution.
The waiver acts as an insurance premium in the event I can't pay my pension contributions.
My question is:

What should I expect when it comes to the refund?
the value applied to my pension pot/ the value paid to me directly/ what about what the value of the pension would have been if the money had stayed in the pension and been working for me (what if the pot went down rather than up!)/ any other ideas?

I wonder if this is rare for a pension company to do this.? It was really hard to spot too, even with the online account.

Thanks in advance.

If it was due to them failing to carry out your instructions I would expect the money to be put back into the pension revalued to what it would have been worth if it had been put there from the start, even if lower, plus a small compensation payment paid directly to you.
