Beer Batter.

I made some beer batter for fish a couple of weeks ago, used aout a quarter of the beer and put the bottle, with the top on it back in the fridge

I want to make beer batter again, will the beer in the bottle be okay to use or do I need to buy another bottle, seems an awful waste of money cos we dont like beer so cant finish the bottle off

It seems fizzy when I shake it, can I have your thoughts please

Depends on the beer to be honest and whether it is a bottle conditioned real ale, which has probably now gone off (and hence fizzing) or a lagertype flavourless gubbins

But beer isn't designed to be opened and left really

It'll be fine - you're using it for the flavour in the batter and that won't have deteriorated. Beer doesn't go off very quickly as long as the lid's been on.

Edited to add: Agree with arbrighton about bottle conditioned beer - that could bit a bit risky/flavour could have been tainted. But it will say on the bottle if it's bottle conditioned - most bottles from big breweries aren't, whether lager or not.

In future would you be better off making 4 X the batter, then freezing three portions to stick in the fridge on the morning of intended use?

Not much use now, I realise, but worth a try!

The problem here is that we buy booze for cooking, then end up drinking the lot (even the rubbish stuff)
  • Inn BoP house, the bottle would be in the recycle bin. Empty!

Thank you all, it worked fine, used up most of it this time, but binned what was left this time.

Thanks M&M for the freezer tip, will try that next time..
