Student loan from 1992

I am being continually harassed by phone, email, texts, and letters from Capquest Debt Collecters regarding a student loan from 1992. They say I owe £600+.

I am now 68 and retired and my only income is my state pension etc.

I do not think I need to pay this and have so far ignored their calls etc but it is constant and every day they will contact me.

Is there anything I can do to stop them once and for all or perhaps there is a template for a letter I can send them that will make them stop. I am afraid to contact them really in case they try to get nastier than they already are. The people who call are quite aggressive.:(

Did you receive confirmation that the balance was written off when you reached 60 or were you in arrears at the time?

I do not know what happened as I lived in a different part of the country at the time and as far as I know I was not in arrears. This was not a loan from student loan company but from a top up company called ERUDIO

I'm not sure what you mean here, Erudio have never leant a penny to anyone. They bought your loan off the SLC in 2013ish.

Can you not afford to pay the loan in any capacity? Perhaps £ per week?

Was your loan up to date when you reached 60 or were you in arrears? Were you making repayments before that date or were you deferring payments because you were under the repayment threshold?

I didnt make any payments. I left the area and forgot all about it. Does this mean I have to pay it?

    Yes, of course.

Unless you deferred the payments correctly you'll owe not only the amount you borrowed but a considerable amount extra in charges.

You need to negociate a payment plan based on your current income.

I thought the loan gets cancelled after age 65? (some give age 50, but I've not seen this confirmed anywhere)

Or is that only the case if no repayments have been made?

Anything owed on the "mortgage style" loans is written off at the age of 60 if you were a mature student when you took them out but you have to be up to date with the payments or your deferrments for this to happen.

If you've just walked away from them for 20 years with neither making payments nor deferring them you'll owe the lot plus large sums of arrears and charges.
