An app to tell me how far I 've run??

Options
I have just done my first park run and really enjoyed it. However yesterday they had people there who ran at a set pace which I found really good. So you choose how long you think you will take and you run with the 32 minute person or the 40 minute person or whatever.

Is there an app out there that I can enter my distance or my preferred time and it will tell me how I'm doing? I want to pace myself but if I know I have say half a mile left I can spurt up - if I have enough puff!

I cycle a lot and use MapMyRide, which lets me plan and follow a route. I think you can see things like total distance, distance left, speed, etc.

There's a similar app (from the same people) called MapMyRun, which is geared towards runners. Check it out:

EDIT: I haven't used it, but I keep hearing about an app called Strava which is a similar kind of app:

Thank for that. I have used it but as far as I know it records what you have done and doesn't prompt you as to how much I may have left if you see what I mean. But thank you again

  • Why are you looking at your phone whilst running?

Just get on any distance mapping calculator website and memorise where the half miles are on your course.

I haven't used them much, but although you can just get it to record what you're doing, in MapMyRide (and presumably MapMyRun) you can create a "route" (by clicking points on a map). Then you can later start that route, and it knows where you are, how far from the finish, etc.

I tend to use my bike computer for that, rather than the app, but I'm sure there will be a way to get that info on screen.

You may be better looking at a running watch.

They don't have to cost the earth (although they can!) and have all sorts of metrics you can choose from.

I have a Tomtom Spark Cardio (around £150), Garmin and Polar are also good.

Much easier to look at than your phone whilst running and will sync with most of the popular running apps.

I use Strava. Would recommend it. It gives you audio updates through your headphones at each mile/km with time distance and pace. Its very useful

Id look at Strava and Endomondo. Endomondo has lots of options for audio feedback on how you are doing.

I used to use strava for this as you know that if its parkrun then it is 3.1 miles long and strava can be set to shout out times at distance intervals so you can tell how far you have left.

Now I just use a garmin forerunner that I picked up off ebay for £30.
Whilst old it allows me to put routes onto the watch for navigation and also gives me all the info one could need.

PS that must be a large parkrun to have pacers in it. They are fairly rare in all but the bigger races nevermind at a parkrun.
