Help! I have transferred money to the wrong account!

I hope this is the right place to post this.
I have stupidly transferred some money to the wrong account (on the 3rd September). I misread the account number my sister in law wrote down:eek:. I have contacted my bank (Smile), who have said there is nothing they can do, and to contact the Abbey (the bank I transferred the money to). I will do this asap, but what are my chances of getting the money back? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks Al Mac. Do you know what programme it was, eg Money Box or Jeremy Vine so I could try and track it down via listen again? This was on the radio the other day. It isn't your banks fault, so they don't have to rectify the situation. It is up to the other party to agree to return the money. This assumes it is a valid account. If it isn't it should come back after a few days.
If they don't want to return it, then it's small claims, I think they said that.

When both parties are with the same bank this can be rectified.
If there are two seperate banks involved you are on your own.0 -
I suppose it depends how much money is involved and what lengths you are prepared to go to get your money back.
Remember it was you that put in the wrong numbers not the bank.
If it was the bank however I would start applying for as many credit cards you can and when you get to 50 or 60 cards start spending yourself stupid using other cards to pay off each other. Then one day if you don't have any saleable assets declare bankruptcy.
And the banks courts and government can swivel.:T0 -
I think it's a bit odd, that there is only a two field data check. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to have to enter
sort code
account number
and surname or other account name
If all three are not consistent than the transaction doesn't go through.
I guess there is no problem if the sort code and account number combination is not a valid combination, but if they are then there may be problems ahead
I always copy and paste when I can0 -
May I ask the reason for commenting on a post which is almost 3 years old?Best Regards
