Unless the employer is doing anything that would amount to unlawful discrimination (and there is no suggestion that they are) then they can ask for whatever they like.
If the OP's services are desirable enough then there may be scope for negotiation otherwise it is a case of do as they ask or find a job elsewhere!0 -

Yeah i agree i don't see how bank statements would prove anything as i wasn't receiving benefits0

Surely their reason for asking is not to dissect your private life but just to make sure there isn't any evidence of concerns that would impact on the business.
They might ask questions which you'll have to answer, but I assume whoever does that job has a duty to keep confidential information for themselves and if their job is to do with for every single new employee, I very much doubt they care much about judging people's private lives. You understandably care about not revealing some personal information, but they likely won't care one iota about what they see unless of course it provides information of concerns about your ability to do the job.0 -
Some of us take bank accounts for granted, my nan opened one for me when i was about 8 and started putting money in it every now and then and my mom opened a bank account for me probably sooner than that.
Not all of us have the privilege of having parents/family who do things like that and as you grow up, if you find banks daunting or have literacy issues then a bank is the last place you'll go.0 -
I'm currently working with a man who is maybe 40 odd. Has no bank account. When his wife went to prison started having his wages paid to a man who lives round the corner rather than fill a form an open an account himself. I too was flabbergasted but it really does happen.
He could open his own account - as in he's never been done for fraud or anything that would stop him - he just never bothered to fill in the forms.

I would never, ever comply with that level of intrusiveness. I'd tell 'em to take a run and jump! Bank statements!!!
I've heard of this sort of thing for low-paying jobs in deprived areas before, HR gets all high and mighty because they know the local people applying for the jobs have no alternative but to submit to humiliating and degrading processes.
There must be other jobs available not run by the Stasi.0 -
Leaving jobs off a CV is never a good idea as it can come back to bite you, as you have discovered. "Forgot"you had these jobs?? Any prospective employer is unlikely to believe that one. Yes, 2 very short terms of employment doesn't look good, but it looks a heck of a lot better than being caught lying.

Of course, if this person subsequently clones your identity and bank accounts and robs you blind you won't be blaming the company who employed someone with a big gap in their history ( they were actually in prison, but it would have been ridiculous to ask them to prove they weren't), and you won't care too much about it because the person was low paid.
Seriously, you think a background check is a humiliating and degrading process? It isn't waterboarding you know. And the OP has already made it clear, there are few jobs in the area which pay reasonably well, and this is one of them. So what is the point of telling them to go find another job when there aren't any?0 -
Is this a call centre for a bank? They will want to check your complete honesty in the information that you have provided to them and also that there are no financial pressures that would make your having access to clients' bank account details a risk.
If you try to get out of providing bank statements then you can kiss this job goodbye. If you do provide them and they show that you have been less than completely honest then you will get the same result.
