    Isn't "probation period" a bit of a red herring anyway. Since George Osborne made it so that everyone is on a 2 year probation period anyway. They can fire you for any reason they like in the first 2 years, so what is the point of a 'probation period'.

    You could also argue that someone could quit their job or get fired on any given day.

    I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think it's this black and white.

    You can't take an employer to an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal until you have 2 years service.

    However, if your contract states 3 months probation, and after a year they just sack you for no reason, there is nothing stopping you bringing a private prosecution for damages due to breach of contract against your employer.
