    She holds SOME of the cards - legally, the partner is entitled to half the equity of the house when it sells to someone else, or she buys him out. In the latter case, solicitor costs are much lower and there are no Estate Agent costs, so that's a negotiating point. There's normally some give and take - the balance between letting yourself get walked over and get on with your life.
