2 months till first wage?

Can't post image links.
So contract says first weeks wages is a weeks lying time.
Also then states that I am paid in monthly arrears, subject to the payroll schedule.
April - 2nd March - 5th April paid on 30th April
May 6th April - 3rd May paid on 30th May
June 4th May till 7th June Paid on June 30th

That's 27 days between a cut off and a pay day for may!!

Someone explain to me how A. This is even legal and B. How it even makes sense?

So I started working on the 18th of April at this job, I didn't get a wage on the 30th April, I didn't expect to, I knew it was cutting it a bit fine.

But now to read this... I won't get a wage this month either? Or well I might but it'll be maybe 1 or 2 weeks? When come pay day I'll of worked there for 7!
How do they need a full month to process and pay wages? My last job and every other one was a week at most between cut off and pay day.
The cut off for this pay day 30th May is 3rd of may, so basically I'm always going to be paid a whole month behind. Which doesn't sound like a big deal till you think about the fact that I'm not some 16/17 year old living at home with mum and dad, and actually have rent to pay (2 months of it already) and we'll everything else. How is it legal to make someone wait almost 2 months for a wage?

Now look at the contract stating about a week in lie, but also a month in arrears... say what?! Not to mention they take money off your first wage for uniform. I'm baffled by this. Surely this can't be legal?

  • Your rate of pay is 7.20 per hour, payable monthly. Thr monthly pay period is subject to the monthly payroll schedule. You will be paid on or around the last working day of the month. In arrears. On commensement of your employment the company will retain the equivalent of your first weeks pay as a weeks lying time. This sum will be repaid to you on termination of employment.

I just don't understand why they need a weeks laying time on top of their arrears?! I just always assumed that lying time was your time between cut off and pay day. Obviously that isn't quite right from reading this.

You signed the contract. It's contract law that applies.

Wages are supposed to be paid promptly but if they say that promptly is at the end of the month 3 weeks after you've worked the time then that's what you agreed to.

I wouldn't have signed the contract without agreeing that an interim payment was made earlier as all of your benefits that you would have got had you continued to look for work would now stop too.

I would also say that you've got rent and bills to pay. Housing Benefit won't cover it as you are working so you need the money from somewhere.

Most employers are reasonable and will lend the money to you earlier so you can pay the rent. Your landlord may also understand and help by allowing you to pay the rent late on this occasion.

    Is this job worth it?

I'd rather stay on benefits than work for £7.20/hour paid a month after I've completed a months work.

No pay for 8 weeks. I wouldn't be able to pay the bills. I'd explain that to DWP and I would think that would be a valid reason to turn work down.

If you don't work your notice period you do not get that weeks "lying time" paid to you.

We pay on the 28th (or the day before) for that month, with the cut off for overtime/expenses on the 14th.

Unfortunately, contract law prevails here, so it's what's in your contract.

Most employers will be happy to give an advance on the first months wages (usually about half if asked nicely), which may help towards rent/food/travel to work.

See the contract is confusing based on the fact it says a weeks lying and paid in arrears, it mentions a monthly pay role schedule but it doesn't actually say in it anywhere how many weeks the arrears is. When I first read it, obviously I didn't catch on. Not till I was given the payroll schedule to look at a few days ago and put it all together.

Pretty standard for the Civil Service to have a month lying on.
