Paying off DMP debts with credit card

Hi all,

I only have a few more payments to make on a 5 year stepchange dmp and was wondering if it would be possible for the last few amounts to be paid off with a credit card. ie: pay the debt over the phone giving a credit card number or a debit card number.

I know that the advice will be to just stick the last 2 months out but I am just asking the question if it's possible without causing any damage/upsetting my creditors etc...?

I just wanted to ask here before ringing up stepchange.

    Hello there,

I would suggest that you are very careful in this situation. It is unlikely that Step Change will allow you to make payments to a DMP on a credit card and, in fact, they may say that by having a credit card (and actually taking out more credit) you have breached the terms and conditions of your DMP and cancel it.

Besides that, I am not really sure what you would have to gain by making the instalments on a credit card and creating debt when you are so close to being debt free. I think your first instinct is right here - stick with the DMP and see it through. Good luck,

    Hi Laura,

That's great thanks for the advice. It was just a question as my wife is now in her last 3 months of maternity leave which is completely unpaid dropping our joint income by the monthly debt repayment amount (£675). With only 2 more payments to make I was wondering if it was ok to transfer the debt to a credit card and then I can make those big payments once my wife is back to work and we are earning what we were before.

The credit card is my wife's, the debt is all mine from before we met.

Don't get into more debt, let them wait for the money if you can't afford it, I assume the remaining balance can't be that high, pay it when you can, you don't need the DMP anymore.
