DIY Beauty? Help!

Hi there!

I'm trying to save money by cutting down on my expenses for all things beauty - so no more expensive face creams, makeup, hair masks... So instead I'm going to try making my own beauty products at home.

What are your favourite DIY beauty tips? A friend suggested I try avocado face masks, but I don't know if I want to rub guacamole on my face...

Thank you! :)

Naturewatch are about the publish an updated version of their "Homemade Personal Care" and "Homemade Household Cleaners" booklets.
I have the previous one which is very good. Might be worth ordering a copy?

Oats are a good base for face masks, and you can buy large packets of own-brand oats for not much money.
I make an oat, honey and banana mask with warmed oats, and a ripe or over-ripe banana and just own-brand honey.

Also made a lip scrub recently with sugar and a few drops of mango smoothie (from a carton) and it was pretty good!

Thank you WeAreGhosts! How is the texture of the oat-banana mask?

I'll definitely try making a lip scrub with sugar... I'll probably end up eating the whole thing though!

I make my own lip balm, from this Neal's Yard recipe: it works out very cheap, I get my supplies from ebay.

Heat 1tsp beeswax melt in a bowl over a pan of simmering water (1 part wax) 1tsp coconut oil add to beeswax(1 part solid oil)
1tsp shea butter, mango butter or cocoa butter add to mix(1 part butter) add :
1tsp oil of choice I use hemp , almond , sunflower or olive(1 part liquid oil)
take off heat add 5 drops essential oils(lemon/peppermint etc
pour into pots and leave to cool.

I also make face masks from fullers earth clay which is very cheap from chemists and I use coconut oil for everything.. cleansing, moisturiser for face and body, and hair oil
Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE :)

I've started using a yogurt face mask, where you just apply plain yogurt to your your clean face, wait for it to dry (20-30 mins) then wash off.

Lactic acid in yogurt is an exfoliant. I use plain full fat yeo valley yogurt but any brand will do, just maybe not yogurt with fruit, toffee or the like in! :P

Thanks faerielight! I heard coconut oil can also be used as makeup remover, I'll give it a try :)

Perhaps just drop a level on your brands - I cannot go without soap and glory conditioner, but everything else is budget level and I've not noticed a difference.

There's always bargains to be had on brands as well, direct cosmetics are good, and you can always buy in the sales.

I've found home made to be awful and just poor quality, and I ended up spending more on "ingredients" than I would have spent on a product.

Thank you DomRavioli! I'm always a bit hesitant to use budget skincare and makeup, but I'll have a look around!

If you're a fan of Youtube check out Nicole Guerreiro - She's done a vid talking about DIY beauty treatments - all of the usual household items (or cheap to purchase) and it's very effective. That might be worth a look as some are similar to Body Shop masks, etc but a fraction of the price.

    Hope this helps x
