Received a letter off this company today stating I owed them £840
42p, from a debt i owed the telecom company o2. The debt is supposedly from 26/06/2012. I have never had a pay monthly contract with o2 as i have been with orange/ee for the last 6/8 years.

How do i go about dealing with this situation as it is not the first letter i have had off them.

The other one was regarding a different debt in a part of the country i have no ties too.

If you're sure the debts don't belong to you then ignore the letters.

They are probably "fishing" and sending letters to people who have the same or similar name to you. They have a debt, can't trace the owner so are sending letters out in the hope that someone will call up and query it so they can then bully in to paying up even if the debt doesn't belong to you.

So, as I say, just ignore.

Yes, standard practice - ignore scum, or if absolutely necessary, write to them. NEVER phone them.

Write them a letter. If, and I appreciate you say the debt is not yours, this debt does turn out somehow to be related to you then you can prove due diligence by having responded to them as, often, the act of ignoring them can be misconstrued. I grant you this may solicit a response, which will require a little time and effort on your part, but if the claim appears equally vacuous at that point then you can put the matter behind you.

There are a number of jolly good template letters on this site that might suite your needs in terms of a robust rejection.
