Sick of office work and being a glorified secretary

There are plenty of 'admin' jobs where you do your own work rather than someone else's typing. Eg train and bus operators have to have vehicles diagrammed between running in service, refueling, cleaning, maintenance, special jobs, and the crew have to be diagrammed in a similar way taking rest periods into account.
If you have or could learn steno (machine shorthand) then you could do real-time transcription for hearing impaired people at meetings, uni lectures etc. Sometimes this involves working on-site and sometimes you can do it by realtime internet link. If you have written shorthand or speedwriting you might be a notetaker for a disabled student. Steno also opens up subtitling for TV work either live or recorded - Red Bee does a lot of UK subtitling and at least of of their subtitlers is in Australia.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

I understand thats an option, but the 3yr BSc route, gives you the practical grounding for the role, without the high pressure academics. I would only consider the Masters, if i already had vast relevant experience of working in healthcare and was aiming to bypass certain areas, to head straight to a specialism0 -
I work in admin.
It all depends on how you look at it.
During the course of my career I had a six month break to try something else, I went off and did something completely different to admin, and much worse paid and ended up coming back to admin work as whilst money is not everything - being skint does bring about it's own problems. So many other jobs do not have the regular pay and cushy office hours you are home for tea each night kind of thing
Some fantastic sides to office admin work - you are not outside in cold weathers, you have a structured life so know what time you will be home each evening, you are pretty well paid for the work you do - and regularly paid. Can be a great job if you have mobility issues. You can always get an admin job if one place makes you redundant there are many others
downsides: can be repetitive and not everyone wants to be stuck at a desk all day, can feel a bit rat racey in terms of doing structured office hours
I try and blow out the negatives these days by keeping an active social life wth my husband. When I walk out of work I do not think about it again until I returnWith love, POSR0 -
I work in facilities management. It's partly admin orientated, but it's well involved - my day varies from general office housekeeping, to managing the health and safety paperwork - i.e. ensuring the compliance of the office. One minute I'll be filling a dishwasher, the next I'll be managing the fire risk assessment. Then I'll be fixing a paper jam on the printer and then have to deal with a water leak in the office. No five minutes are the same - let alone a day! :j
I came into the role five years ago. Up until that point, my career had largely been in Reception and customer service positions, and I only had basic FM knowledge.
Sounds like it'd be a good role for you if you're getting bored!:)
Good luck - I hope you find something you enjoy soon! :T0 -
A PA is a glorified secretary or really these days with personal laptops etc simply a secretary?
There are lots of admin jobs including those in the public sector that are not secretarial but are admin based.
Is it working for 1 person that you don't like?June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000
