Tutoring?

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone works as a Tutor, either full or part-time. I am really keen to make it my full time job (self employed) and would love to hear of anyone else's experiences.

Thanks

I haven't done it but a mates ex boyfriend used to tutor kids to get into certain schools and Unis, he is paid very well, and often followed his hosts family around the world, including a 6 month stint on some huge mega yacht trying to tutor a billionaires kid to pass the Eton entrance exams.

Kid got into Eton, and he was given a 50k bonus. As he says at that level, its a single mans game, as he can get a call and have to be on a plane a few hours later.
  • That sounds interesting!

Initial indications suggest that you work for the company in a recruitment capacity (not least because you have an affiliate code!); would be helpful to disclose that when putting them forward, as there are many other potential tutoring websites to use...

  • It seems a mixed bag.

I knew a few people who did bits post uni, the bulk was badly paid and just helped scrape by until they got a job they wanted. One or two got well paid gigs as above but that was a temporary great if you are single type thing.

Mother made a business of it but it took about six years to build to the point of making enough to be viable as her only income. It worked well whilst we were all living at home, and she still has kids at home who do a good deal of supportive work. It looks very hard to pull off without 'support staff' as it were. One now makes her entire living off the business also.

Another trick seems to be in her case to charge an accessible amount, payable a term at a time in advance, and have classes of at least 8 kids a time plus run practice exam days etc at weekends and holidays.

The time losses either side of a class were huge at first, an hour teaching turning into two to three hours time once picking up and dropping off, parents wanting to talk etc was taken care of. Short changeover times of 10-15 minutes between groups made a huge improvement to productivity.

Also never reply to emails once the business is established. That was again she says a huge time sink that yielded very little income. She turns away large amounts of custom so can afford to be somewhat picky, at first the unpaid annoying bits that get the name circulated as good to deal with were very time consuming.

    EDIT

One schoolfriend did set up a tutoring business, he never actually taught anyone but just took a cut of other people doing the hard work. That seemed to be the best return on time and effort by far.
