The economics of stadium food

Adding variety to the menu and lowering prices will only work financially if they can satisfy the extra demand they're creating.
A lot of stadia can't do that even with limited offerings and high prices. Went to Wembley recently - wasn't overly hungry but wouldn't have minded something to eat. The offerings were limited so I didn't bother - joined a much shorter, faster queue for a pint, and arranged to meet the others back at our seats. Some of the guys with me who were in the queue for food got back to their seats 15 minutes late for the second half.
The prices were very high too, but if I were hungry that wouldn't have entered into consideration. Speaking personally I don't mind paying top dollar at a stadium if I can get what I want without missing any action. Why pay £50 a ticket, and spend half of it extremely hungry for the sake of a couple of quid? Similarly, why pay that only to miss a decent chunk of the event queueing up because the food and drink is reasonably priced?
Not singling out Wembley for this by any means, it's just the most recent example. Vicarage Road used to be horrific at getting queues moving, and is still hit-miss.0 -
AIUI, and I can't say that I've studied this in any depth, the typical modern business model is that you:
- Get the local Government to build you a shiny new stadium for your sports team
- Rent that stadium off the local Government (at below a commercial rate)
- Look to gain franchises for other sports to get the stadium complex working for you as many days as possible
Actually I think you're probably spot on -

When I go to the nags I always eat a picnic on the train rather than buy the overpriced rubbish inside. Very little vegetarian choice, usually a sandwich for ~£4.50. I've often thought getting local catering colleges in for cheap eats would be interesting. I had a 33-1 winner at Ascot once, and being a good little MSEer, still baulked at £2.50 for a Magnum. They are an EYESORES!!!!0

If only, I went to the Cup final saturday, the prices are ridiculous
Oh and the programme £10.
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0
