Can anyone recommend places to buy fabric cheap?

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy some fabric to recover a rocking nursing chair and an ottoman to go in the nursery. I'm not a sewer but think I can manage these myself!

I found a lovely fabric in Dunelm but it is £9/m and I think I will need 6 metres or more . I've tried finding it cheaper online myself but no joy.

Can any of you recommend places to get cheap material from? Online or shop.

Thanks

I am part of a team who make items for charity. My partner buys material from car boot sales such as quilt covers and curtains. Picks them up very cheaply and really good quality.

    Hi, have you tried online-fabrics.co.uk
If you're in the Midlands, the actual shop is great!

Aberkhan - http://www.abakhan.co.uk - is good, if you're in the north west the shops are better.

Also a second vote for eBay.

    Thanks all.

Sadly don't have time to trawl charity shops or bootsales. I will check the suggestions out. Thanks

I'm getting a bit confused about measurements. The ottoman I want to cover is approx 3.5 metres in length around it and 42 cms in width, plus an extra 1mx42cm for the lid.

If, for example, I was to buy this fabric, how much would I order?

You need to calculate the size of the pieces. The easiest way to do this is to take the old fabric off the ottoman and measure them. You can then work out how to fit them into the width of the new fabric. So if you needed 3 pieces that are 42 cm by 3.5 metres, then you could fit them into 4 metres of the fabric you mentioned. You need extra for seam allowances.

I'm not sure I understand how you've measured it. If it's like a box with a lid like most ottomans, it would help to have the length, width and depth (height) of the base box. Then just the length and width of the lid unless it's very padded on top and the lid has a depth too. Then you'll need a bit of extra to fold the edges neatly. How is it covered at the moment. Could you take some photos? What's it like inside?

Sorry for so many questions :o

    I can't believe it's 3.5 metres long.
