OK, apparently we are the worst at something ... namely managing our money ... why is this .. for goodnes sake we have Ballymena in our province which should really help our average .. where are being let down by?

    I read somewhere that because there has been a huge jump in value of houses, people who bought houses prior to the jump are under the impression that they are well off, ie, they may have a mortgage of £80000 on a house now worth £300000, therefore they are more likely to run up credit card bills, etc, knowing they can use the equity to 'pay it off'

    The other side of that is, those who are trying to get on the property ladder, or have mortgaged to the limit of / beyond their means, are probably struggling to cope.

    Oh, and naff wages.

    I think you're making an unfair judgement using the term 'wastrels'. The article said that people here are bad at managing money but mentioned nothing about people overstretching themselves by borrowing more than they should - it concentrated on other issues such as not understanding financial products and not having bank accounts. Perhaps you can say that profligacy is implied but it certainly wasn't discussed in the article.
