Teaching in schools to boost my income

Options
Hi Folks

I am a private tutor and teach maths up to GCSE level.

With the exams coming up, do you know if I can go into secondary schools in order to improve knowledge and understanding of the subject to current year 10 and 11 students?

I rang the education department who said they are not aware of any laws allowing or not allowing me to do this.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I doubt very much that schools have a budget to pay for an additional member of staff to do that sort of thing.

For the future, if you're not a qualified teacher, you may well be better looking at part time hours within the post 16 sector.

What makes you think you can improve the knowledge and understanding of the subject to students any better than the staff already in the school and get paid for it?

Who would be paying you though? Not really viable if there is no budget allowance for it with the school.

Rather advertise as a private tutor and go to students homes - they pay teachers to teach in school hours.
People don't know what they want until you show them.

I am a teacher in an FE college...(but have taught in a school)...

You firstly need to hold a teaching qualification, such as a PGCE. You will also need to hold a recent DBS check, to show you are not a convicted criminal etc.

You can register as a supply teacher with a large number of agencies - who will regularly find you work (but also take a cut of your earnings) - and their rates can vary. Supply teachers are commonly expected to cover classes outside of their normal subject.

I would be very surprised if schools would pay you to come in and deliver material (remember just how tight schools budget is, thanks to our wonderful tory government) - but they would probably bite your hand off to do it voluntarily.

I would imagine, as someone who does private tutoring myself, that you should be able to find as much work opportunities as you want right now. Sign up with agencies such as firsttutor (and get paid more per hour) - half term upcoming is ripe for opportunity.

Actually lots of schools, those that are Academies can employ whoever they like now to teach. The demise of the qualified teacher is upon us and so long as you have DBS clearance, they may well choose to employ you over someone with QTS, as you will be cheaper. Considering the peanuts they pay qualified teachers, I wouldn't expect to be getting a lot. i.e. less than an NQT on the bottom of the pay scale.

All that said, this is not really the time of year to be looking for a job. Most vacancies will have been filled by now for the upcoming academic year, the day before half term is the absolute last date. Basically, all schools know that only the dregs of the applicant pool will be applying now.

But as others have said, why would a school employ you? They expect the teachers they are already paying to provide revision classes in lunch times and after school.

True enough, but most schools will still be looking for qualified teachers firstly, and the only reason they wouldnt is because of cost - would you want to work in that environment?

I wouldnt quite go as far as describing those on the market as "dregs" - but many are newly qualified.

Anyway - I think the point everyone is making to the OP is....your tutoring is probably the better bet right now :)

I don't think school and college will enroll you until and unless you show your teaching qualification or a license.
