Iron spouting out white powder - why?

After 6 months of complete slacking and no time on MSE I've been reading the flylady thread and getting inspiration. I've just used my iron for the first time in a year    (in my defence it has been in a packing box! Ok, that doesn't make it sound better....does it?) I'm ironing on the kitchen side as I haven't bought a board yet, but I've noticed my iron is leaving white powder everywhere. It's not limescale because I don't live in a hard water area, any idea what it might be?

Cheers in advance :D

  • HI, MP! Welcome back - I'd been wondering where you'd got to.

It probably is limescale; you can get small deposits even in softer water areas. Try filling with water then shaking (soleplate down, as if you're ironing, over the sink) which will remove the worst. Then try ironing onto a towel until it stops coming out.

Come on over to Flylady, and start posting - just reading about it isn't enough!

Hi PenPen thanks for the welcome back :)

Hope your chooks are well. Oh I didn't realise you could get build-up in soft water area. I'll try your tip, thanks!

    Hi Mushypeas,

It's good to see you posting again! :) As Penny has said it does sound like limescale. Try this thread for more ideas of how to get rid of it:

Does anyone know how to descale an iron?
