Aldi/Lidl brands vs supermarkets?

I use both Aldi's and Ldls in Sittingbourne and prefer driving the 5 miles there rather than going to my nearest one in Gillingham The Sittingbourne stores are brilliant and especially the Lidl they are both spotlessly clean and staffed by nice cheerful sales staff
My nearest Aldi unfortunately in Gillingham is not very nice and the car park is really too small as is the shop and the staff are really grumpy and couldn't care less.
My youngest DD goes to the one in Strood and loves it (bearing in mind she used to berate me for using the discounted stores) until the Strood Aldi's opened up their new store and she loves it as well now.I also if I have money off a big shop coupons for Waitrose go now and then to Allington just outside Maidstone, but that is a once every three months thing as a rule But I find that its really not a lot of difference to sainsburys and the quality is superb.Plus I can get things there that I can't get in the cheaper stores (ie treats) Although all my DGS love Lidls chocolate in preferance to cadburys:) I like it for the price. I have Tesco metro three minutes walk away from where I live and very rarely go in there anymore its just overpriced for what it is.Lidls and Aldi's fruit and veg are great and well priced.
I think tesco have took their customers for fools and that's why they seem to be struggling at the moment and folk are voting with their feet and their purses.DD and I used to save our joint points up to use on holiday but for over the past year we hardly have any anymore and our yearly points vouchers have dropped from almost £200.00 to less than £15 this year alone We would rather have the cash in our pockets than silly points0 -

P.S. Why do people put *** in names of supermarkets? I've typed Lidl and Aldi twice in this thread and haven't got struck by lightning or anything.
I read in a long ago and far away thread that it was to stop the supermarkets googling and using it for research. Or something?0 -

I asked about this ages ago, and I was told it was to stop the threads showing in searches.
I have to say, I find all these *** and euphemisms like Herr A and Sainsbobs a bit confusing, and can make people's posts difficult to read.
I read on a thread about somebody shopping at Tosspots, and I still haven't worked that one out.
I don't really care if my posts show up in searches, so I'd just like to say Aldi, Lidl, Sainsburys, Tescos and for good measure. Waitrose and Marks & Spencer's!Early retired - 18th December 2014

Thanks everyone for the tips, I look forward to having a nosey tomorrow. When I lived in Bedford I didn't use either as they were out of the way and not particularly great which put me off. I'm in Milton Keynes now and have an Aldi and Lidl quite close by but haven't been to either yet. The Aldi I think is closest, and it looks quite big so I'm hoping for good things!
Any more tips please let me know, I'll look back here before going tomorrow0 -
I first discovered them years ago because a german friend enthused that had arrived here!
I still find that the best value is the stuff that german households would regard as basics: seafood & fish fabulous, some cakes & biscuits (found those lovely chocolate cigarillos you eat with ice cream!). Lidl bread is good as well, and I keep their "half-baked" by me.
Some of their posh stuff is more expensive than other places, so be wary.0 -
We only have lidl in this country so can't comment on aldi
I don't know if it's a regional thing, but lidl isn't particularly cheap here
However in saying that, the food is always excellent quality
Regular items for me
Mince, hand linked sausages, mini sausage rolls, butter, cooked ham, frozen garlic bread, thick cut chips ( the Maris piper ones) peas, corn, tinned toms, tinned mackerel ( not fussed on their sardines) toilet roll, bathroom cleaner, tissues, reduced fat crisps, any of the chocolate, herbs, spices, flour, sugar, yoghurts , milk, parmasan (ours does the aged ) mozzarella , cheddar, any of the deli specials like the garlic sausage and mortadella that show up in polish week, and their bread, particularly their in store bakery
Fruit and veg can be hit or miss, you do have to look at it, but the specials at 49p are often worth picking up
What keeps me shopping in lidl's though is they don't carry a lot of choice, there's only one or maybe two choices so the shops are smaller and you don't impulse buy ( so much )
The shops here have improved a lot over the past ten years. Much tidier and more organised and their range of foods has increased
Don't forget, keep your receipt, anything you don't like you can take back for a refund0 -

It's like the phrase "I didn't want to read and run" - if you see it once in a thread you will almost certainly see it a few more times in the same thread. There's no point in it - either read and run and no one will know, or just post without the silly comment!!0 -
I'd wager that most people who do it, don't actually know why. It's the sheep mentality - they've seen others do and think it's the done thing or 'cool'.

Totally agree with this
I think the **** started off in the glitches threads, the idea was that supermarkets doing searches of what was being said about them, weren't alerted to the glitch so it could be taken advantage of
Why it's become common practice across the forums, I don't have a clue, it's not like we aren't allowed to name names here, indeed we are encouraged to do so as long as it's not liabus
Yeah the read and run comments make me laugh as well. Threads only show how many views, not who's viewed so as you say, no one knows0
