About to go freelance. Terrible decision??

Oh please help, my poor head is pickled and I don't know what to do.

I've been headhunted for a new job. It's currently only an interim position on a short term contract (I'm trying to negotiate that contract at the minute). It's in the public sector, so public sector rules are you need to open it to the market. So this would be an acting role. then the advert would go out, then I'd apply for that. I've been headhunted, so there's a strong possibility I would get the job when advertised. But it certainly isn't a done deal.

The job itself is fantastic. It's well paid and would be a reasonably sized pay rise for me. Aside from that it's MY DREAM JOB. And I'm desperate to do it.

However, I also really want to buy a house. If I'm honest, that trumps everything. We're first time buyers. My husband is on a low wage and I earn significantly more, so we've always said it would make more sense for me to do the mortgage application and have it in my name.

We're not far away from a deposit and thought we could realistically start looking mid-late summer this year. It feels closer now and I'm really happy.

But this new job is brilliant. It pays more, so I could bump up our deposit a bit and get a better deal on a mortgage. But. What if I don't get the job after the interim contract is up and it goes to market? I could make a living out of freelancing and I wouldn't starve, but the dream of buying a house would go up in flames.

Part of me knows that the sensible answer is to drop it, to stay in my middling but SECURE job and keep saving. But there's another part of me that's desperate for advice - can it be done? Is there any way that I can have both dreams - a house and the dream job?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Take the new job or you'll always wonder "what if" , plus dream jobs are rarer than dream houses so go fur the job whilst it's there.

I suppose as well that I could always look for a new permanent job, even it was on a lower wage, just to satisfy the mortgage lenders, if the worst comes to the worst and I lose out....

If you don't apply for the job you'll always regret the decision. The house can wait.

Suggest you apply, get the interim job offer and then decide.. you could always push them a bit on when they might go out for the perm one etc and make it as long as possible if that suits you better. Having the acting role under your belt for say 6 months will def help with the recruitment for the perm role
