Helping my Mum with a mortgage

Hello, looking for a bit of advice here - just to get my head around everything.
Some background:
My dad recently passed away and there is a good majority of the mortgage left to pay and my Mum is in her late 60s so getting a mortgage will be difficult/impossible. The current mortgage is up and they'll be kicking her out in July.
I'm currently renting a house from a family member and don't have any property or mortgage. I'm thinking about helping my Mum to keep her home by getting a mortgage on the house with her.
Is it a case of being added to the deeds and "re-mortgaging" the house for the sum that is owed and maintaining that payment? Or is it far more complicated than that?
This is still something I'm thinking about as it's a huge commitment, my partner and I were/are thinking of buying a place and this would change things.
