hi
today I had a letter from a debt collector informing me that I owe money to JCIA LL - POST OFFICE TELECOMS.
they said they have written to me previously regarding the debt.
and if I don't pay up by 16th may they will take legal action.
what do I do.
1. I have never had anything with post office telecom.
2 I have not received any other letters from them.
3. they have the name wrong on the letter. they put Mr B B Row when my name is MR B ROWE.
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL.
PLUS I AM WAITING TO GET HELP FROM STEPCHANGE,

Hi Browe1973,
I can understand that letters out of the blue like this can be worrying, but try not to panic. I would suggest that you write back to the debt collector with one of our sample letters and state that you do not recognise the debt and that you think they may have the wrong person and if they wish to keep chasing you they will need to send more details. If they don't do this but keep harassing you then you can complain under the FCA guidelines. Good luck,
Laura

Start with a prove-it

Usual opening salvo "despite previous letters etc etc", and an unreasonable respond by date, all designed to get you to ring and pay up straight away, no questions asked.

I've a similar story from Three.
Letter arrives telling me I owe them 20 odd quid from an old account from 2012, havent been able to contact you, moved house ect, 20 days to pay/contact or they'll bring in their DCA.
Prove it letter send signed for delivery to address on the letter (though it was clear they were pushing the phone us to arrange payment angle) with my own little amendment pointing out I bill DCAs for my time for unproven debts.
Last week a bundled letter from three telling my I didnt contact them and they'd sold the debt to the DCA with a letter from the DCA informing me that the debt may have been for this or may have been for that.
The next day a letter from Three customer services asking me for any other postcodes I may have lived at to find my account that they're sorry I've had to contact them "again" about???
I've replyed to Three suggesting that they may like to buy the debt back and that its their account number they gave me so they need to prove it and, being reasonable, that I wouldnt be billing the poor pawn of a DCA on this occasion but would do for further letters.
So at what point do I enclose a draft N1 form to the DCA to let them know I'm serious😂0 -
I think you should first inform the DCA of your rates and charges if they wish you to do any work on their behalf.0

Lol.
That was in my original so I think I can assume they're happy with my fees next time they require me to read one of their letters so when the MCOL forms go in no one can accuse me of being unreasonable.0
